One of the great train journeys of the world pulled into the station in 2004 with the long-awaited extension of the Ghan railway.
After decades of chugging from the sprawling city of Adelaide to remote Alice Springs, the 2,979-kilometre transcontinental journey now extends to tropical Darwin in the Northern Territory.
Along the way, the train slithers like a giant serpent across the dry landscape through the awesome Red Centre, the outback town of Tennant Creek and the remote Aboriginal heartland of Katherine.
The Ghan runs twice a week, has varying standards of on-board accommodation, serves fine dining tucker and offers passengers the opportunity to jump off for further exploration. Click here for more information and bookings.
