Situated on New South Wales' chilled-out north coast, Byron Bay is the place to get in touch with your inner nudist, stoner, surfie, yogi or bongo-banger.

A mecca for hippies and yuppies alike, this rainforest-flanked east coast resort town boasts 30 kilometres of sandy beach as its playground.

Sydney

Sydney knows it's a stunner
Sydney knows it's a stunner

Australia's oldest, largest and most cosmopolitan city oozes glitz, glamour and silicone gel from its leaky double D breast implants.

One of the world's most beautiful cities, Sydney's only downsides are its simmering racial tensions, vast urban sprawl, deteriorating public transport system, obsession with road-building and Earth-stopping traffic jams.

That aside, it's a splendid city to visit, offering plenty of attractions beyond its magnificent harbour.

Kakadu National Park

Having served as the awe-inspiring backdrop for Crocodile Dundee , Kakadu National Park is at once familiar and other-worldly.

Uluru (Ayres Rock)

You'll jump for joy when you clap eyes on Uluru

Despite its overexposure in oodles of tourist brochures, Australia's most visited site rarely fails to floor those who clap eyes on it.

Melbourne

Trams rattle through Melbourne's flat, gridded streets

The capital of the state of Victoria, what Melbourne lacks in sex appeal, it certainly makes up for in sophistication.

With its fashion sense, cafe culture, book shops, galleries and thriving performing arts scene, it easily earns the title the "cultural capital of Australia".
