What to do in Bolivia

Climb Mt Illimani

For those who are fit and able, Bolivia’s second highest peak Mt Illimani is a must do.

From the top, the entire buckling chain of the Bolivian Cordillera Real de los Andes is visible. If the air is clear, South America’s highest Peak Mount Aconcagua in Argentina is also visible on the horizon.

Illimani has six peaks which loom over nearby La Paz. At sunset, its permanent ice caps glow peach and pink, creating a spectacular backdrop to the rambling city.

There are stories told of early explorers who while looking for El Dorado, the lost Inca city of gold, in the jungles of Peru, walked on the treetops because the canopy was so thick.

The Bolivian jungle is much the same. It’s a sweating mesh of lush vegetation which casts a spell on most visitors and is well worth a visit.
