Ciudad Perdida Travel Guide - All About Ciudad Perdida, Colombia

It takes three days to walk to the abandoned city of Cuidad Perdida

The 'Lost City' is Colombia's version of Machu Pichu.

The city was built by the Tayrona Indians 900 years ago but abandoned after the Spanish conquest (when most of the Tayrona were wiped out). It was only rediscovered in 1975, having been covered for centuries by impenetrable jungle.

Ciudad Perdida, which includes impressive stone steppes and terraces, is not easy to reach but this fact adds to the allure for adventure-minded travelers. It takes three days to walk there and while the mud-soaked jungle is a formidable obstacle, hikers tend to complain more about the oppressive heat.

Local authorities regulate who goes there so the only way to make the trip is by guided tour. These are organized by Turcol from Santa Marta. Turcol charges around US$180 per person for the six-day trip, including transport to the trailhead, food and guide.
