The Dominican Republic is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Caribbean. Its combination of warm tropical waters, alpine wilderness and fascinating history can be enjoyed as part of a relaxing or active vacation.

The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with the nation of Haiti.

History and influences

The Dominican Republic is a former colonial holding of Spain and the country's Spanish influence is evident in its architecture and historic ruins. Spanish colonists also brought many African slaves to the island and the country's African heritage is most apparent in its music.

Western and African influences combine in the nation's signature dance, the meringue.

The former Spanish colonial capital of Santo Domingo is rich in historic sites. This modern southern city is home to many 'firsts' in the Americas, including the first cathedral, the first hospital, the first university and the first chapel.
