Budapest straddles the Danube River

Hungary is located in central Europe and is bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia and Montenegro.

It is home to central Europe's largest lake, Lake Balaton, which is a popular summer holiday destination.

Budapest, the capital, is built on two sides of the Danube River. Buda, on the west side, is the older part of the capital, filled with cobbled streets, historic buildings, the Royal Palace and stately museums. Castle Hill offers great views and is often thronged with musicians and performers. Pest, on the east side of the river, is the commercial centre and a good spot for shopping.

Hungary has a number of spa towns and hot springs as well as a fine tradition of wine making - in towns such as Eger holidaymakers can sample the famous Bull's Blood wine.

If you prefer an active holiday, you will enjoy hiking in the Borzsony hills or caving in the country's 3,000 plus caves.

Accommodation in Hungary ranges from elegant and luxurious hotels in the major cities and towns, to spa resorts, self-catering accommodation and campsites.

Hungary has international airports in Budapest, Debrecen and Sarmellek among others.
