Kuta Beach on the island of Bali is a great place to learn to surf

Indonesia is home to some of the world's best surf breaks and attracts professional surfers for major contests.

There are numerous breaks of varying size and consistency, so if you are a serious about this sport, bring a quiver of boards to suit different waves.

First stop for most surfers is Bali, where the legendary Ulu Watu breaks deep and hollow to the left. Bali is a good place to learn to surf, especially around Kuta Beach where board hire is cheap.

More adventurous surfers should pack up their gear and head for Pulau Nias, off the coast of Sumatra. You'll get great surf and a peaceful atmosphere far removed from hectic Kuta Beach.

Other great surf breaks can be found on Lombok, Sumbawa and Sumba, but the truly dedicated must go to Grajagan (G-Land) on the island of Java. The famed break produces huge barrels, some of the most challenging left-handers this side of Hawaii.
