As a chain of volcanic islands, Indonesia is well-endowed with peaks to bag. Most of the volcanic craters are dormant, but a few still gurgle, bubble and occasionally blow their top.
One of the most popular climbs is up Bali's Gunung Agung, the abode of the gods. The mountain is revered locally and every temple on the island is orientated toward its peak.
A more strenuous climb goes up the hulking peak of Gunung Rinjani on nearby Lombok. After taking in the mystical view from the top, clamber into the crater for a soak in the curative hot springs.
The most spectacular (and most photographed) volcano has to be Gunung Bromo on eastern Java. The relatively squat crater rises out of an enormous caldera, occasionally releasing puffs of smoke to remind you it's still active. A sunrise view is simply magic.
With a good map, a sense of adventure and time, you may be able to climb a dozen more volcanoes during your visit.
