The Caribbean island of Martinique is situated in the French West Indies, along with the islands of Saint Martin and Gaudeloupe.

Its main town is Fort de France.

Martinique's north is characterized by luxuriant foliage, rivers and dramatic mountains, with Pelee mountain being the highest peak at 1397m. The north also has volcanic black sand-beaches at Carbet and Saint Pierre.

The island's south is less hilly and boasts exquisite white-sand beaches.

Activities on land include hiking, tennis and cycling and popular watersports are diving, kayaking, surfing and windsurfing.

The main language is French. Notable attractions include the Botanic Gardens, fishing villages and rum distilleries.
