A visitor finds his feet in the Maldives

The nation is a stunning collection of some 1,200 low-lying, coral-based islands floating 220 miles southwest of India in the Indian Ocean.

Many of the Maldives' lush tropical islands are uninhabited, and one-third of the nation's population lives on the largest island, Male. The climate is hot and tropical and the white-sand beaches practically glitter with beauty.

About 90 islands in the Maldives are developed exclusively as tourist destinations. These luxurious getaways are renowned for their clear water, abundant marine life and enormous lagoons that seem to be created just for diving and snorkeling.

The vast majority of resort islands in the Maldives cater to the exclusive end of the tourist market with bungalows and villas filled with the best furniture and amenities, including swimming pools, spas and restaurants.

While nightlife is somewhat limited on these isolated islands, most people do not miss it at all. Their days are filled with tropical paradise activities such as scuba diving, surfing and snorkeling, and the balmy evenings are for sipping cocktails, relaxing under the stars and romance.

Travelers can take flightseeing tours to get a bird's eye view of the islands and ocean. Photo flights are also available, with Nakatchafushi and Ihuru being two of the most-snapped islands.

Survival guide

The Maldives is a Muslim nation and is made up of a number of ethnic groups, including Negroid, Dravidian, Arab and Sinhalese. Most locals are reluctant to interact with tourists. These feelings are so strong in fact, that travel to the islands inhabited by locals is severely restricted. Tourists can take brief guided tours to these locations but are not at liberty to explore at will. These restrictions are in place to limit the impact of tourism on the Muslim population.

When traveling to the Maldives, be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, your camera and a stack of books. The temperature in the Maldives rarely drops below 77°F, even during the rainy monsoon season from May to October. Pack lightweight clothing - preferably made of cotton or linen - along with an outer layer that is waterproof and windproof.

Flying into the Maldives is a unique experience, as Hulule International Airport is located about a 15-minute boat ride from the nearest island, Male. There is no regular boat service from the airport to other islands, but the various resorts typically send their own boats to pick up travelers. Alternatively, travelers can arrive in the Maldives via cruise ships.
