Altai Tavan Bodg National Park Travel Guide - All About Altai Tavan Bodg National Park, Mongolia

Pinched between Russia, Kazakhstan, China and the rest of Mongolia, the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is a world unto itself.

The mountainous park is dotted with gorgeous lakes, alpine meadows and glaciated peaks.

The region, known as Bayan Ölgii, is rich in history; you can't go far before stumbling upon rock art, ancient carved pillars and burial mounds laid out in mysterious concentric circles.

The park is inhabited by ethnic Kazakhs, heirs to the ancient sport of eagle hunting. In winter it's possible to visit Bayan Ölgii and watch these hunters mount their horses and scour the landscape for fox, wolf and rabbit. To see one of their great golden eagles pounce upon some unsuspecting prey is not for the faint of heart, but is certainly unforgettable.

The Kazakhs of Bayan Ölgii maintain a distinct cultural identity. You'll be treated to traditional songs, food and crafts - it's impossible to leave without picking up a Kazakh wall hanging.
