The acrobatic dusky dolphins who make their home in Kaikoura are attracted to humans who resemble dolphins. And as you jump off the back of a boat into freezing open ocean dressed to the nines in a buoyant wetsuit, protective hood, snorkel, mask and fins, you'll never look or feel more amphibious.
As the first flash of silver swims past, you realise you are in the thick of a pod of hundreds of dusky dolphins. You break into muffled, underwater song (apparently this piques the dolphins' curiosity), trying to simultaneously breathe through your snorkel and reach the high notes.
Suddenly a dolphin appears from beneath, circles you three times, flashes you a bemused look and then shoots off into the distance like a graceful grey torpedo.
Congratulations. Against all odds, you have successfully seduced a dolphin.
