Machu Picchu - the Lost City of the Incas

The citadel of Machu Picchu is the most famous of the Inca ruins.

This stunning city - which dates back to the 1400s - was overtaken by dense jungle following the Spanish invasion. It was rediscovered by archaeologists in 1911 and has gone on to become the most visited site in South America.

Every day, thousands travel to Machu Picchu by foot along the Inca Trail or by train, bus or helicopter to marvel at the city's construction.

No matter how many photos you've seen, or documentaries you've watched, the Lost City of the Inca will blow you away. There's a tangible power and sadness that inhabits the ruins perched on top of a lonely mountain. You can't help but wish history were different so the people who built this remarkable and spiritual place were still around to explain how and why.
