Golfing nuts have been swinging their clubs here since the 15th century and at last count there were seven courses in and around the town. To boot, the St Andrews' Royal & Ancient Golf Club has been the international governing body for golf for more than 250 years.

Downtown St Andrews is an architecture gem, with cobbled streets and quaint alleyways. The town's premier landmark is the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, situated above the harbour and built in honour of Christ's apostle who apparently hauled the bones of Christ here and gave him a Scottish burial.

If you're game for a chilly dip in the North Sea or perhaps even a spot of kite flying, St Andrews has two sandy beaches - East Sands and West Sands.
