Around 20,000 ancient rock paintings have been discovered in the Drakensberg Mountains

An outdoor wonderland for hikers and bikers, the Drakensberg Mountains offer the winning combination of stunning scenery and ancient cave paintings.

While living deep in the Drakensberg Mountains, the indigenous San people painted animals, hunters and and shamen (holy men). Some paintings are more than 20,000 years old and are open to the public. Unfortunately, they are also open to the elements and vulnerable to weathering. Around 20,000 individual rock paintings have been recorded at 500 cave and overhang sites between Royal Natal National Park and Bushman's Neck in Natal province. In Ndedema Gorge the Sebaayeni Caves has a whopping 1,200 paintings.

A good starting point for viewing cave paintings is the Kamberg San Rock Art Trail and Interpretive Centre which offer visitors information on the San and the opportunity to view outstanding examples of their art in the company of a trained community guide.

B&B accommodation in the area is plentiful.
