Through the key hole: A mosque tower in Tunis

Tunisia is located in North Africa and lies on the Mediterranean coast.

The country provided the stunning backdrop for Star Wars (filmed partly at Matmata) and is a prime destination for sun-deprived package holidaymakers fleeing the harsh European winter.

Tunis is the country's compact capital, and Turkish and French influences are evident in the buildings and wide boulevards that surround the Great Mosque. Sidi Bou Said is a charming medieval hillside suburb, perched on the Bay of Tunis and offering lovely sea views.

Nearby is the ancient city of Carthage, shrouded in tales of the legendary love affair between Dido and Aeneas. Today, ruins are all that remain of Carthage, but you can view the impressive former French cathedral of St Louis which now stands on the site.

Tunisia's terrain ranges from the lush Mediterranean coastline and golden-sand beaches of the Cap Bon Peninsula to the dunes of the Sahara desert. Constructions called ksars dot the landscape, which are made of sand and look like fortresses or store houses. It is possible to stay in the desert in tent-like accommodation which still offers all the luxuries of a hotel.

The main gateway to Tunisia is Carthage International Airport near Tunis. Low-cost charter flights also service the resort centre of Monastir.

Ferry services link Tunisia to Europe with many people accessing Tunis from Malta; Trapani, Naples or Genoa in Italy, or from Marseille in France.
