The second largest city in the country, Kumasi lies a sweltering 500 kilometres north of the equator and 250km northwest of Accra.
The city's fragrant, blossoming surrounds have also earned it the reputation as the ''Garden City''.
Kumasi is also the “royal capital” of Ghana. The Asantehene (King of the Ashanti), His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, commands such respect that all visitors (including members of the British Royal family) are expected to – and do – kow-tow before him.

The new Asantehene’s hospitality, at his inauguration back in 1999, didn’t quite match that of his 19th Century predecessor, Osei Kwame. During festivals, King Osei Kwame would order barrels of rum to be poured into brass pans and left all around town, to be drunk by “whoever felt the need”.
It is worth taking a tour of the grounds of the Asantehene’s palace. The history of the Ashanti people and Ashanti cultural history are particularly highlighted.
