Making the most of the Scottish summer in Fort William

If you're looking for extremes you've come to the right place.

Sitting at the foot of Ben Nevis - the highest mountain in the United Kingdom - Fort William was originally a station for English Redcoat soldiers built by and named after William of Orange.

Every year visitors flock to Ben Nevis to hike the well-trodden Pony Track on the south face. If you're after an additional adrenaline fix, the north face is a favourite for mountain climbers and ice-climbers alike thanks to its 700 metre-high cliffs. The Ben Nevis Race takes place every September for those who fancy running up and down the mountain.

Fort William is also the finishing point for the West Highland Way, a 152km track that begins in Glasgow and meanders through spectacular highland scenery.

While in Fort William, be sure to check out Old Inverlochy Castle, do a spot of sailing on Loch Linnhe or attend the Lochaber Highland Games.
