If you thought Braveheart was an impressive display of Scottish strength then you should check out the Highland Games, held throughout the country over the summer months.
Harking back to a 14th century method of recruiting warriors, the games are a series of strength-displaying sports as well as a celebration of Scottish Highland culture.
In between bagpipe, drumming and Highland Fling performances, you can witness muscular Scots demonstrating extraordinary feats of strength in games such as tossing the caber (running and hurling a tree trunk), tossing the weight (spinning and throwing a heavy ball attached to a thick chain), throwing the hammer (chucking a sledge hammer), putting the stone (similar to shot put but using a hefty stone) and tossing the sheaf (using a pitchfork to hurl a bundle of straw over a bar).
Highland Games are staged between May and September, with the most popular events occurring at Braemar, Cornhill, Oban, Cowall and Lonach.
